A customer-witnessed quality review for a high-end automotive wheel component project, covering CMM inspection, coating thickness measurement, material analysis, and 480-hour salt spray testing.

For high-end automotive components, quality is not proven only by machining the part. It must also be verified through inspection, testing, documentation, and clear communication with the customer.

Recently, a representative from the Taiwan team of a European high-performance automotive brand visited our facility for an on-site quality review of a confidential wheel-related component project.

Due to confidentiality requirements, the product design, drawings, and customer information are not disclosed in this case study. Instead, this article focuses on the inspection process, testing items, and how we worked with the customer to verify the quality of the parts before further project approval.

Understanding the Customer’s Quality Requirements

Before the inspection started, our team reviewed the drawings, inspection requirements, sample status, and key quality points together with the customer.

For automotive wheel-related components, quality control is not limited to one dimension or one test result. The customer needed to confirm several important points, including dimensional accuracy, surface treatment stability, material reliability, corrosion resistance, and overall consistency.

This first step was important because it helped both teams align on what should be checked and how the results should be reviewed. In high-end automotive projects, clear communication before inspection can reduce misunderstanding during final approval.

Understanding the Customer’s Quality Requirements

Dimensional Inspection with ZEISS CMM

One of the key steps in this review was dimensional inspection using ZEISS CMM equipment.

CMM inspection allows us to verify critical dimensions, hole positions, profiles, and geometric accuracy according to the drawing requirements. For wheel-related automotive components, even small deviations in key areas may affect assembly, fit, appearance, or long-term performance.

During the on-site review, the customer was able to see how the inspection was carried out, how measurement points were selected, and how the data was confirmed. This gave the customer a clearer understanding of our inspection process instead of relying only on a final report.

Checking Critical Features and Local Dimensions

In addition to CMM inspection, our quality team also reviewed several critical areas using auxiliary inspection methods.

Some features require focused checking because they may be directly related to assembly, contact surfaces, thickness control, or local fit. These checks help confirm whether the parts are not only machined correctly, but also suitable for the customer’s actual application.

For precision automotive projects, this kind of detailed verification is necessary. A part may look simple from the outside, but the real quality risk often comes from small features, local surfaces, or areas that affect final assembly.

Surface Coating Thickness Measurement

Surface treatment was another important focus of this review.

Our team used a professional coating thickness gauge to check the surface coating thickness after treatment. For automotive exterior or semi-exterior components, coating thickness affects more than appearance. It can also influence corrosion resistance, color consistency, surface durability, and local dimensional stability.

If coating thickness is not well controlled, it may lead to color variation, weaker surface protection, or potential assembly issues in certain areas. This is why coating thickness measurement is an important quality control step for high-end automotive parts.

By reviewing this process on site, the customer could directly understand how surface treatment quality was checked and how the results were recorded.

Material Verification and Laboratory Support

The customer also reviewed our laboratory support capabilities, including material composition analysis and related sample preparation areas.

For high-end automotive components, material correctness is the foundation of the whole project. Even if the machining process is accurate, the wrong material or unstable material composition can create serious quality risks later.

Material analysis helps confirm whether the metal material meets the project requirements. It also supports traceability and gives customers more confidence before moving forward with production or further validation.

480-Hour Salt Spray Testing

This project also included a 480-hour salt spray test to evaluate corrosion resistance after surface treatment.

Automotive wheel-related components may be exposed to rain, road salt, mud, cleaning chemicals, and changing weather conditions during real use. For this reason, corrosion resistance is a key requirement, especially for parts used in high-end automotive applications.

Salt spray testing helps verify whether the surface treatment can provide stable protection under a harsh environment. It also reflects the quality of pretreatment, cleaning, surface processing, and handling before shipment.

For the customer, this test was an important reference for judging whether the part could meet future application requirements.

Why On-Site Review Matters

An on-site quality review gives the customer more than inspection data.

It allows the customer to see the actual process, ask questions directly, review the inspection method, and understand how quality decisions are made. This is especially valuable for high-end projects, where trust cannot be built only through emails, photos, or quotations.

During this visit, the customer was able to review our inspection equipment, testing process, laboratory support, and communication workflow. This helped create a more transparent and reliable basis for the project.

Conclusion

This on-site quality review showed that high-end automotive component projects require more than CNC machining capability. They require a complete approach that includes drawing understanding, process control, dimensional inspection, surface treatment verification, material confirmation, reliability testing, and clear customer communication.

For DAXIN CNC, our goal is not only to manufacture precision parts, but also to support customers through a reliable and transparent quality verification process.

We will continue to improve our machining, inspection, surface treatment control, and testing capabilities to support customers in demanding industries such as automotive, robotics, medical devices, and industrial automation.
